・この池はたくさんの水鳥が遊ぶ都会のオアシスです. This pond is an oasis in the city where many waterfowl come and go as they wish.

・彼女は今白い紙を前にして空想の世界に遊んでいる. She has a piece of blank paper in front of her and is letting her imagination run free.

・星空は空想と科学の境界で遊ぶ楽しさを存分に与えてくれる. The starry sky gives our minds plenty of opportunity to enjoy free play on the boundary between fantasy and science.

3 〔仕事など有意義なことを何もしないで過ごす〕 stay idle; idle; do nothing; loaf and loll; (定職につかないで) fail to get a steady job; (職場などでまともに仕事をせずに) goof off on the job.

●彼は就職しようともせず家でぶらぶら遊んでいる. He's not even trying to get a job and is just loafing around the house.

・彼には一生遊んで暮らせるだけの財産がある. He has enough of a fortune to spend the rest of his life without working.

・ここは 1 年働けば 1 年遊んでいられる豊かな国だ. This is a rich country, where if you work for one year you can take the next year off.

・遊んでいて金をもらうのは申し訳ない. I feel guilty for getting paid without doing any work.

・われわれ貧乏人は遊んでなどいられない. We poor people cannot afford not to work. | We poor people cannot afford to be idle.

・今日はすっかり遊んでしまった. 〔無駄に過ごした〕 I haven't done a thing today. | I have been loafing all day.

・夏の間遊んでいたキリギリスは冬になってアリさんの家へ助けを求めてやってきました. When winter came, the cricket, who had played all summer long, came to the ant's home to ask for help.

・ツーストライクを取ったあとピッチャーは一球遊んでから勝負に出た. The pitcher wasted one pitch and then went for the (third) strike.

4 〔遊興する〕 make merry; enjoy the night life; take one's pleasure; have a good time.

●ボウリングなら 1 時間 1,000 円で遊べる. If we (choose to) go bowling, we can play for one thousand yen an hour.

・女の子と遊べる店を紹介してよ. Hey, do you know of any place where they have girls.

・あの人は若い時にずいぶん遊んだ. He has sown his wild oats. | He played around a lot when he was younger.

・若い時は遊んだが今では落ち着いた. He has settled down after a wild youth. | He played around when he was young, but he's settled down now.

・芸人は遊びなさい. 遊んでそれを芸に生かすんだ. Entertainers, go and enjoy yourselves. Enjoy yourselves, and then use the experience to enrich your performances.

・今日はとことん遊ぼうじゃないか. Let's have a really good time [really live it up, let it all out] today.

・彼は遊ぶ金が欲しくて盗みに入ったと自供した. He admitted that he had broken in intending to steal because he wanted money to have a good time.

5 〔遊学する〕 study away from home.

●彼は若いころ(研学のため)3 年間ドイツに遊んだ. When he was young he spent three years studying in Germany.

・彼は日向在の碩学安井息軒の門に遊んだ. He studied under Yasui Sokken, the noted scholar then living in Hyūga.

6 〔有効に利用されずにある〕 be not in use; lie [stand] idle. [⇒あそばせる 2]

●遊んでいる機械があるから貸してあげましょう. We have some machines that are standing idle [not being used], so I'll let you borrow them.

・遊んでいる土地を駐車場にすることにした. They decided to use the vacant lot for a parking lot.

・それでは遊んでいる人ができる. みんなに仕事を割り振りましょう. That will leave some people with nothing to do; let's assign the tasks so everyone has one.

・左手が遊んでいるよ. 茶碗を持って食べなさい. You're not using your left hand for anything; hold your bowl with it when you're eating.

7 〔もてあそぶ〕

●君は彼に遊ばれているのがわからないのか. Don't you realize he's just toying with you [leading you on]?
